Our school days are very busy and your child learns lots of new skills and information ‘Knowing more and remembering more’ all of the time. We would like you to join us on this journey and provide an opportunity for your child to show you what they can do whilst at home through the weekly homework activity. It is also a great opportunity for your child to have a practice at something that they may be finding a bit tricky. We always make sure that the task is related to what we have been learning about at school and try to keep them fun and engaging.
Supporting your child’s speaking skills is the most important way you can help your child to learn.
Make time to talk and encourage them to hold conversations, recall things that you have done together and speak in full sentences.
Check out the BBC Tiny Happy People website for advice and activity ideas.
Please record your child’s reading in their reading log so that they can earn prizes! Aim for at least 4 times per week.
This link takes you to the ‘Books coming home’ section of the Little Wandle Site. It has useful information about how to help with reading. The first few pages of your child’s Reading Log have support and advice for you too.
Each week you child will bring home a new Phonics Sheet in their Homework Folder. This will tell you exactly what your child has been learning in Phonics that week. Please look at the sheet regularly with your child, practising the sounds and reading the words / sentences.
This link will take you to the Parents’ Page of the Little Wandle website. There are lots of good videos to help you to understand how we teach phonics in school. We want you to feel confident about helping your child at home, so please take some time to watch them – especially the ‘How we teach blending’ clip.

We have been learning about how to stay safe on the internet. We have read this story together: Buddy the Dog’s internet safety story.
A lovely Youtube channel to help children learn to draw. Lots of exciting themes… get squiggling!
We’ve been learning all about traditional tales at school and, as we knew so many, our teachers set us and our families a challenge! Choose your favourite story, scene or character and make it! Children worked so hard with their families. We had a celebration event where parents came to listen to children sing songs, recite poetry and look at all the amazing models and pictures together. It was wonderful. Thank you to all the parents for your wonderful level of support.
The children had a lovely surprise when Jungle Jo came to visit! She brought lots of minibeasts with her and her pet snake. We handled them all and learned so many different facts. Jungle Jo was really impressed with the level of interest and understanding that our children had, hinting that we were the best class she had visited!
We had such a lovely time at Dean’s local small holding. The children got to experience feeding the sheep, holding chicks and petting the pig, horse and goats. Thank you so much to Dean and his family for making the visit so memorable and allowing us to learn all about their wonderful animals.
Once again we have taken part in the Christmas Tree Festival at the Priory Church! We made our own decorations in class and were pleased to see our Christmas tree amongst all the other contributions from the community. It was lovely to walk around the beautiful church and felt like a great way to start celebrating Christmas.
Remember, remember the 5th of November!
We have learned about Bonfire Night and used non-fiction books to find out about traditional ways to celebrate. We know about the history of Bonfire Night and what Guy Fawkes tried to do.
We celebrated at school by having a Fireworks Party! We prepared hot dogs and made chocolate apples. We enjoyed the fireworks together: everyone was very brave!
The children have worked together to create large scale collages of Daddy, Mummy and Baby Bear. First the children drew the bears, making sure Mummy was bigger than Baby Bear and that Daddy Bear was the biggest! After cutting the characters out (with a little help) they sponge printed and collaged the bears’ fur and clothing! It was a great team effort!
Tricky words are words that children can’t blend, because the letters make different sounds to the ones they know.
Tricky words can be tricky for your child to remember. They need lots of practice to learn them by sight. The Little Wandle clip about tricky words, on the Parents Page gives you good advice. Please practice at home using their tricky words flash cards.
